Dr. James C. Dobson, president of Focus on the Family, expressed his disappointment following the Bush administration's recent appointment of Scott Evertz, an openly homosexual man, as director of the White House Office of National AIDS Policy:

"We and other pro-family organizations are concerned about the appointment of Scott Evertz as director of the White House Office of National AIDS policy. For the administration to appoint Mr. Evertz to this position is to advance a fundamental misunderstanding of what causes AIDS in this country. AIDS is primarily spread by promiscuous sexual behavior, and such behavior is rampant among male homosexuals. This appointment sends a disturbing message that the problem of AIDS can be resolved without dealing with the promiscuity of many in the homosexual life. As long as that lie is perpetuated, Mr. Evertz cannot be successful in this position as head of the White House AIDS office.

"This is especially troubling as Mr. Evertz's appointment follows that of Governor Paul Cellucci as ambassador to Canada. While the Bush administration may see the Evertz selection as a conciliatory effort towards homosexual activists, it is creating confusion and frustration for millions of pro-family, social conservatives. I hope the White House will reconsider the potentially harmful message it is sending Americans regarding the issue of homosexuality."
