The Vermont state senate committee passed a bill hoping to overturn same-sex judgment even though they knew it would have no effect.

Neither critics nor supporters of equal protection for gay and lesbian relationships believed that the bill would have the desired result. Nonetheless, a Vermont Senate committee sent a bill to the state Senate in an attempt to overturn the Vermont Supreme Court's ruling that grants the benefits of marriage to the civil unions of gays and lesbians.

Included in the bill's provisions is a statement defining marriage as a state between one man and one woman.

However, it is believed that even if this measure passes it will have not serve to overturn the Vermont Supreme Court's mandate that civil unions receive legal protection which was based on equal protection aspects of the Vermont state constitution.
