The Southern California chapter of Mystery Writers of America presented its third annual lifetime achievement award, "The Marlowe," to writer-producer-director Blake Edwards (of Pink Panther, Peter Gunn, etc., fame) at a June ceremony at the Friars Club. Bob, chapter president, looked on as the presentation was made by special guest Julie Andrews.
The Q&A session was conducted with Blake by Bob and past national president William Link (of Columbo, Murder, She Wrote, etc., fame).
James Lincoln Warren welcomes Bob to the exclusive club of chapter members who've achieved "cover" stories in Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine. Jim's appeared early in the year, while Bob's AHMM debut carried in the July-August double-summer issue.
Edgar-winner John Morgan Wilson and Bob both appear in Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine in 2003. John's short story ran in the May issue. Bob's EQMM debut is scheduled for December.
The Lifetime Achievement Award program featured tributes to Blake by novelist Gar Anthony Haywood, a past MWA-SoCal president, and TV scripter Paul Guyot. Both described how their life and work was substantially influenced by Blake.
